Celebrate 250

250 years of Presbyterians in Princeton

The next year and a half will be exciting and momentous for those of us who share the distinction of being members of a Presbyterian Church in Princeton.

The church year 2005- 06 will mark the 250th anniversary of our establishment as a Presbyterian faith family here. It will be a time to celebrate and remember the challenges and triumphs we have shared in a town, in a nation influenced by Presbyterian witness, and in a world of which we are a part. It will be a time of reflection that will celebrate our contributions, acknowledge our shortcomings, and most importantly, help us rededicate ourselves to building an even stronger expression of faith, love, and concern for humankind that is the hallmark of our Christian faith.

A small group of people at Nassau Presbyterian Church and Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church were asked to consider ways to commemorate this special anniversary. We have spent countless hours consulting with many of you to formulate ideas and plan events to make the anniversary celebration a memorable one.

Our meetings and consultations have led us to select the theme “250 Years of a Presbyterian Presence in Princeton – Witherspoon Street and Nassau Churches – Partners In Faith.”

To date activities have been planned in several broad categories:

  • A series of academic forums related to the ecumenical, social, and political issues of the period and the influential role we as Presbyterians played in shaping them. Leading scholars affiliated with Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary have agreed to participate.
  • A broad array of musical programs highlighting the talents within our congregations and the richness of the arts in our community. Many of the special events will dovetail the current “Nassau at Six” and the “Noontime Concert Series” at Witherspoon. A special joint choir presentation is being planned
  • Shared religious services that will highlight our shared heritage and faith witness that is our common bond as two congregations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). A key component of the anniversary period will be the many opportunities we will have to worship together and thereby become even closer as a faith community. There will be lots of opportunities to share food and drink too, an activity Presbyterians always enjoy.
  • An ambitious program of mission service to highlight our ongoing commitment to serve the poor, the unchurched and those in need within our community and beyond. We will be proposing specific projects of vital interest to both congregations.
  • And finally, a renewal of our connections and a united Presbyterian faith family. We must acknowledge some of the challenges and hurts of our past while forging new bonds of unity that will propel our congregations into the new century.

In the next few weeks and months you will be hearing more about the details of the celebration . We will be calling on each of you to become active in as many activities as fit your schedules. This is definitely an effort that will require broad participation to ensure its success.

Meanwhile, mark your calendars for Sunday, October 2nd, 2005. This is the date we have set to launch our celebration year with a joint worship service in McCarter Theater. It is also World -Wide Communion and Peacemaking Sunday. We think this is an appropriate time to launch this most auspicious occasion in the life of our churches

Come, Worship, and Celebrate!
