Presbytery of New Brunswick

The Presbytery of New Brunswick is a local governing body of the Presbyterian Church(U.S.A.). Its members are ordained Presbyterian ministers from local churches and institutions, and an equal number of elected lay (non-clergy) members, known as elders. Together these presbyters work to support,develop and strengthen the ministry and witness of its 43 member congregations,and to provide governance strategy as required by the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church. read more

About Witherspoon

The congregation of this church was organized in 1837, making it one of the oldest African-American Presbyterian congregations in New Jersey. The Greek Revival edifice was constructed in 1840. Paul Robeson, whose father was the pastor from 1880 to 1901, was born into this church

About Ministry

Witherspoon is a vibrant and active faith-community, honoring its heritage and living the present. its multicultural and multigenerational members are involved in worship, Christian Education for children and adults, women's ministry and outreach to the community and the larger world.

About Worship

Worship begins at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday morning. Services are led by the pastor and lay leadership and include adults and youth. Baptism, which signifies Christian commitment and church and church membership, is administered by arrangement with the pastor to adults and infants, one or both of whose parents are church members. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month.

About Membership

Witherspoon welcomes all those who confess their faith in Jesus Christ and are received by the Session of this church. Classes giving information on our history, theological traditions and congregation are offered throughout the year and are announced from the pulpit.

About Music

Music is a strong vital part of the Witherspoon faith tradition. The music ministry - with choirs for adults and children, a men's gospel chorus, a verse-speaking choir, a chime choir, as well as small group performances - enhance worship services.

The Chancel Choir and Men's Chorus rehearse every Wednesday evening. Young voices of Faith (ages 7-15) and the Chime Choir practice after worship each Sunday.

Music at Witherspoon, offered each quarter, brings together local vocal and instrumental artists.

About Christian Education

Classes for youth are held during the worship service in the Parish Hall immediately after the children's message. On the first Sunday, youth are invited to participate in the worship service. Adult classes provide enrichment to the worship experience and are announced through the Christian Education Committee.

About Youth Fellowship

The youth of Witherspoon demonstrate faith in action by reaching out to the community and sharing God's love and grace through community ministry.

About Fellowship

Each Sunday after worship, the Deacons host a Coffee Hour which brings together members and visitors to the congregation and provides a time to honor special occasions and people. A variety of special events are also held throughout the year, including a Church Picnic, Palm Sunday Tea, Kwanzaa Celebration, and an Intergenerational Event.
